Casey's Story
| Casey was a beautiful golden retriever,
born May 20th, 1994. I remember going to the breeder to
see him when he was only 3 days old. He came from a litter
of 13 pups and we had first pick of the males. The breeder
was a really nice lady. She would let us visit the puppy
when ever we wanted to. We brought him home at 8 weeks

I remember being surprised at how big he already was. He slept
on or next to my bed from day one. Except for paper training,
he never went to the bathroom in the house. He had the kindest
eyes and knew exactly what you were saying. I remember one time
we left a ball we were playing with down the hill, and I said
?h no we forgot the ball! Casey, would you go get it?? and he
did! He was so smart! He had a great sense of humor and he loved
to ride in the car. He would bring in the newspaper and take
it upstairs to his dad. He helped bring in the groceries and
he would always greet me at the door when I came home from work
and carry my lunch box into the kitchen. He knew when it was
5 o'clock - (dinner time). If he didn? get his dinner on time
he would start barking until he did get it. He could swim effortlessly,
like a polar bear, and he

loved to sit out by the campfire. He was
always gentle and nice to everyone including other dogs.
He had a stroke at the age of 13 ? We put his harness
on him and left it on after that. It was easier to assist
him in and out of the house with it on. He would go out
the back door, take care of business, and then go around
to the front door to come in. It was easier for him to
come up the front steps rather than the back. But he could
no longer make it all the way upstairs to the bedroom
at night. He stayed downstairs on the first level all
of the time after the stroke. But not alone. The other dogs stayed |
with him. Not because they had to. They wanted to. But Casey
would bark and would not stop until one of us came downstairs
and slept on the couch. If we waited til he fell asleep and
tried to go upstairs he knew, and would start barking again
til one of us came down. He just wanted one of us with him.
So for the last year of his life we took turns sleeping downstairs
with him. We didn't care, we loved him. We went for a walk every
morning about a block away to the little lake by our house.
Casey loved it.
Some times I did not want to go, but
Casey did. He would start walking really fast, almost
running toward the corner and I would have to hurry
up after him. He sort of had a smirk on his face when
he did it too. He was so funny! Casey died on November
26th, 2008. He just fell over and died. Our hearts are
broken and our lives will never be the same without
him. For Christmas my husband bought this absolutely
beautiful oil painting of my ?nce in a lifetime dog?
It is the best gift I ever received or ever will receive.
It will hang over our fireplace always? Thank You so
much?

I saw this poem on the internet and I want to dedicate it to
Casey:
T here's something missing in my home, I feel it day and night,
I know it will take time and strength before things feel quite
right.
But just for now, I need to mourn, My heart -- it needs to mend.
Though some may say, "It's just a pet," I know I've
lost a friend.
You've brought such laughter to my home, and richness to my
days.
A constant friend through joy or loss with gentle, loving ways.
Companion, friend, and confidante, I never will forget.
You'll live forever in my heart, My sweet, forever pet?
